I find Gillian Bates's style of work quite appealing, the sewn lines, appear to be free hand, and I like the way she has used snatches of colour in her applique, the image is so much more attractive this way - simple.
I like to use tissue paper shapes and draw in continuous line on top. This is a lovely technique of using stitch and fabric or print in the same way. I wonder if she stitches "freehand".
Yes, I agree with you there Pip. The strength in these pieces is there simplicity and colour palette. The lines are very clear and controlled.
