Cobbles

Whilst observing various areas around Manchester, the more I have noticed the hidden history on the roads.
I love cobbled roads, and the way they cheekily peek through worn holes n the tarmac.Giving us a glimpse of the past.
The history survives under a thin layer, why do we bother covering them up, in such a ugly way? Can you imagine how long it took to lay these beautiful roads?
Ok, they are not the best with high heels, and force you to drive slower, is that so bad?

  1. They are such solid and lovely shapes. The petrol blue, grey, burnt orange and metalic colour of cobbles when it rains are almost worth getting wet for. I think a lot of cobbled roads were laid over the old Roman roads, (very straight and flat), if I am remembering my history lessons correctly. There used to be big slate flags for pavements but these have all gone now, too expensive to replace I suppose.
